Research is essential so the more reference material that you can provide your artist with the better, so get some coffee and scour the internet- in the end try to pull together a few well chosen images of Tattoos and artwork that you feel is representative of what you’re looking for.

Once you’ve done this a detailed consultation with your artist will usually result in a piece being designed for you that is in keeping with what you had visualised. If you’ve chosen the option of giving your Tattooist complete freedom with the design then strap yourself in and enjoy the ride. Sometimes giving over such freedoms can result in stunning designs being presented to you. Again, it’s personal preference so whatever method suits you best pursue.

There are many different motifs to choose from when deciding to ink a sleeve and some of the tried and trusted styles work brilliantly when tackling such a large canvas area- traditional Tattoos, Japanese Tattoos and Neo traditional Tattoos are all proven staples as are black and grey realistic Tattoos. The most important factor in all of this is choosing the right guy or gal for the job so it is imperative to familiarise yourself with the different styles of Tattooing and the Tattooists who work in these fields. If you click with the right person then it will mean that the Tattoo will usually be elevated above the mundane and become something special for both you and the artist. Don’t be afraid to have a couple of consultations before you decide to book and ask as many questions as you want about the process, after all it’s going onto your body so you have to be sure!

How long does a Sleeve Tattoo take?

A sleeve is usually constructed over many sessions, the structure of which can be deliberated upon and decided with your artist. It is not optimal practice to come in and do small sessions, give your artist the day to work so that they can get into their creative zone and work with the diligence and passion that large bodies of work deserve.
