Ear Piercings / Scaffold Piercing

Scaffold piercings are an increasingly popular multi point ear cartilage piercing.  These piercings are a favourite for most body piercers as well as clients due to the huge variety of different options available.

What is a Scaffold Piercing?

The most popular variation of scaffold piercings is the traditional helix to helix, or in other words, through two ear rim piercings crossing the upper ear.  The initial jewellery is traditionally with a 1.6mm or 14 gauge barbell with a few millimetres of extra length to compensate for swelling and making it easier to clean several other examples of the different options for scaffold piercings include, but are not limited to a helix to conch, crossing the ear vertically, helix to rook, helix to rook to conch and tragus to conch crossing the ear horizontally, depending on the client’s anatomy, and ear shape.  The overall healing time for scaffold piercings can vary greatly from person to person sometimes taking as little as two months and in extreme cases taking as long as one year, with the average being approximately four to six months.  There are two common methods for cleaning these piercings, the best being to make a solution consisting of ¼ to ½ a teaspoon of sea salt in a coffee cup of water and actually soaking the ear for five to ten minutes then using a cotton bud to remove any dry organic matter then rinsing the ear thoroughly with plain water to prevent dry skin.  The other method is to use saline solution, which is readily available over the counter in any pharmacy or grocery store in the form of contact lens solution applied to a cotton bud and thoroughly cleaning around all sides of piercings as well as the jewellery itself.  Whichever method you choose it should ideally be done twice a day, once in the morning and once a night, as well as anytime you are having a shower, at the end of your shower let the water pour directly on to the piercing in order to rinse any products off.  As with any piercing always make sure to wash your hands before cleaning your piercing.
